Organizers of over 470 international long-distance races in more than 120 countries will be meeting at the Osaka Marathon in February 2023.

The Osaka Association of All Athletics (Chairman: Masayoshi Matsumoto) will host the 23rd World Congress of AIMS in Osaka in February 2023. The AIMS World Congress is held on average once every two years, and the 23rd Congress will be held alongside the Osaka Marathon. This will be only the second time the Congress has been hosted in Japan, after the 1983 Congress in Tokyo.

What is AIMS?

AIMS (the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races) is an association whose members are the organizers of over 470 international long-distance races held in more than 120 countries and regions. Founded in 1982 with 28 starting members, the Association aims to share information and knowledge as well as expand marathons and long-distance road races around the world. In Japan, there are 22 races that are official members of AIMS including the Osaka Marathon, Osaka Women’s Marathon, Tokyo Marathon, Hokkaido Marathon, and the Nagoya Women’s Marathon.
The AIMS World Congress meets on average once every two years, held at the location of and in conjunction with the dates of the Congress’s host race. After the cancellation of the 2020 Congress due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2023 Osaka Congress will be the first Congress to be held since September 2018 in Tallinn, Estonia.

Congress Venue

The World Congress will be held at the Hotel New Otani Osaka. Opened in 1986, the Hotel New Otani Osaka is directly adjacent to Osaka Castle Park, surrounded by water and greenery, and holds an unparalleled view of the castle tower. The Osaka Marathon, a AIMS member event, places its start and finish lines within the park, which is beloved as a runner’s paradise by athletes of all experience levels. The Hotel New Otani Osaka has also been selected as the stage for numerous international conferences including an APEC Ministerial Meeting, and has welcomed many VIPs and guests from Japan and around the world.
