Showcasing sustainable event management: we've opened the SDGs for MICE Achievement Archives!
The SDGs for MICE Sustainable Event Evaluation System, launched on June 1, 2022, encourages sustainable event management in all stages of meeting and event planning by providing tailored guidance and specific, feasible actions to implement based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs.) Showcasing sustainable iniatitives is a key aspect in encouraging the continued practice and expansion of sustainable event management. This is why we have created the SDGs for MICE Achievement Archives, listing and showcasing the accomplishments of past events that have undertaken the evaluation system and carried out sustainable initiatives.
*Events are listed in chronological order.
Event: Theo Jansen Exhibition
Venue: ATC Hall
Held over 79 days from July 9 to September 25, 2022 at ATC Gallery, the Theo Jansen Exhibition was the first event to utilize the SDGs for MICE Sustainable Event Evaluation System. Already employing the Renewable Energy Certificate system, a first for a major exhibition, the event was a feat in carbon offset initiatives, with nearly 60% of carbon emissions produced during the event period being offset.
On November 21, 2022, the Osaka Convention & Tourism Bureau hosted an educational seminar for the members of the Osaka MICE Business Alliance at the Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka, focused on the topics of sustainability as well as using unique locations as meeting venues. By both implementing sustainable measures and making the system a main topic, this event was a clear demonstration the SDGs for MICE Sustainable Event Evaluation System in action.

In order to promote and evaluate sustainable event management across Japan, the Osaka Convention & Tourism Bureau launched the SDGs for MICE Sustainable Event Evaluation System. The OCTB was also the first convention bureau in Japan to receive ISO20121 certification, the official standard for sustainable event management.
The SDGs for MICE Sustainable Event Evaluation System encourages event organizers, attendees, service providers, and local governments to work together to implement sustainable practices at meeting and events. It is our goal that through this program, event organizers can guarantee safety and peace of mind for both themselves and their attendees, ensure that the event fosters continued engagement in sustainable practices, and increase the overall value of their event. This system incorporates all 17 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
*This evaluation system is not-for-profit. Through this program, we aim to promote education of the Sustainable Development Goals and encourage organizers to implement them at events.
